In this very readable book, Nolan paints a picture of Jesus that reveals what a truly jesis figure Albert Nolan was a Roman Catholic priest in South Jesis who wrote this book in the mid ‘s when the Cold War was at a fever pitch and it seemed that the superpowers would lead the world into mass destruction. The conflict was not so much with being a Christianiry, but there was conflict with the Church and with other members of the Church, because there were many people who said that one should not be involved in politics, and that even issues of justice were not the kind of thing that a priest should be involved in.

But there were a few people from the Churches who did go into politics, partly because there were not many people to take all the political posts of government that was necessary at the time.

On occasion he would state a,bert in a new way that I hadn’t seen before and really made me think. So, I thought maybe the best way to talk to them about theology and about faith was to talk about the person of Jesus. He showed care for the poor and oppressed at befpre time when they were though to be beyond saving, and taught healing and forgiveness. So that combination of contemplation, study, and preaching is what attracted me to the Dominicans.

The book raises some interesting questions, but overall it wasn’t in line with Catholic teaching, so I can’t recommend it. Well, we’re only thirty-eight men. Some were minor, like Nolan’s claim that Jesus used children as an analogy for “the statusless oppressed”, or that the least in the Kingdom was greater than John the Baptist because John the Baptist had status.

We have to realize it is a struggle that will take a long time. It is the quality of our life that really makes the witness, rather than the numbers. His information about the historical backdrop of Jesus’s ministry was good, his analysis of his relationship to the poor, the oppressed, and sinners was strong, and I liked his chapters on healing and forgiveness.
